The next major change for the Affinity line was a reduction in body thickness from 1.75" to 1.5", noticeable in size and weight. Many people attribute the Affinity's decline in quality to the introduction of these changes in 2000. The pickguards generally now have 11 holes and screws, departing from the original '50s style. The 2000 and later "Crafted in China" Squier Affinity Strats are different from the 1996-1999 Affinity Strats most have alder bodies, larger headstock shapes, and somewhat inferior small parts. Colors were typically black, white and red.
They had single-ply 8-hole pickguards like the '50s Fender Strats giving them a classic look. Tuners and electronics are also very similar. The Affinities are similar to the Japanese-made Squier Bullets of the mid-'80s the same alder bodies, same rosewood-type fretboard and maple necks.
SQUIRE AFFINITY STRAT SERIAL NUMBERS
From 1996-1999, "Made in China" Squier Stratocasters carried the "Affinity" decal on the headstock and have serial numbers as NCXXXX with the first number the year of manufacture, e.g. Available now at Guitar Center, the Affinity Stratocaster HH is an affordable ticket into. Unusual for a Strat, it has two humbucking pickups for warmer, thicker sounds. Its also a solid backup for more advanced players, and an excellent platform for DIY mods.

They’re noticeably larger compared to classic ones. The Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster HH is a beginners guitar with room to grow. Affinity Strats have 70’s-style headstocks. But you can easily identify most of their Strats. Sure, some of their features have changed over the years. They were introduced into the Squier lineup in 1996 as the entry level model. The X-MONITOR software can be used to assign a different function to each one of the switches such as auditioning different speaker profiles for A/B checking, dimming, system mute, ARC on/off, standby, and more. iLoud Precision can instantly switch settings via the remote control's four illuminated switches.
